English/Parts of Speech/Nouns/Number

In English it is usually easy to count nouns. The most common endings for plural nouns is an s.

cat -> cats

goat -> goats

brick -> bricks

day -> days

For some nouns we must add es to make it plural. Usually singular nouns which end in ch, s, sh and x need es to make a plural.


watch -> watches

bus -> buses

rash -> rashes

fox -> foxes


Also, some singular nouns which end with an f add ves and remove the f when used in plural.


leaf -> leaves

glove -> gloves


There are also some irregular nouns, but these are not very frequent.


man -> men

child -> children

person -> people

mouse -> mice
